Imagine walking along wild coastal cliffs, feeling the ocean breeze on your face, hearing the crash of waves below, and seeing not a soul in sight for kilometers. This is not a dream — it’s the Fishermen’s Trail, one of Europe’s most breathtaking walking routes, and the beating heart of many of our By Foot programs at Vicentina Travel.
If you’re searching for a trail that offers both solitude and authenticity, beauty and rawness, tradition and wild nature — look no further.
What is the Fishermen’s Trail?
The Fishermen’s Trail (Trilho dos Pescadores) is a coastal path that winds along the Atlantic shoreline of southwest Portugal, following in the footsteps of local fishermen who still use parts of these routes to access hidden coves and fishing spots.
Now officially part of the Rota Vicentina, this trail stretches for more than 200 km, from Porto Côvo to Lagos, passing through dramatic cliffs, sandy beaches, picturesque villages, and some of the most untouched natural scenery in Europe.

Why walk the Fishermen’s Trail? What sets it apart?
Unlike many long-distance trails in Europe that pass through densely touristed or highly developed areas, the Fishermen’s Trail offers a rare combination:
- Unspoiled Nature: Almost the entire trail runs through the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, one of Portugal’s most protected coastal areas.
- Raw Atlantic Beauty: Expect towering cliffs, hidden beaches, sea birds, salt-scented winds, and golden light that photographers dream of.
- Sandy Paths, Not Just Rocks: This is one of the few European trails that involves walking directly on coastal sand paths, making the experience both challenging and uniquely immersive.
- Authentic Local Life: Pass through small fishing villages, eat freshly caught seafood, and experience the rhythm of a region where time still flows slowly.
- Point-to-Point Journeys: With our self-guided or supported walking programs, each day you’ll move forward — no need to return to a base, no circles. Just a continuous journey by foot.
When to walk the Fishermen’s Trail?
While the trail is technically walkable year-round, the best times to explore it are between March and June, and again from mid-September to early November. Here’s why:
- 🌸 Spring (Mar–Jun): The coastline explodes with wildflowers, the temperatures are pleasant, and the landscapes are green and vibrant.
- 🍂 Autumn (Sep–Nov): The light becomes golden, the beaches quiet, and the trail offers a more introspective, peaceful atmosphere.
